Waianae Mall hosts about 170,300 sq.ft. of retail space. This was a total tear off and re-roofing project that included the installation of Sika Sarnafil membrane roofing on 2 of the 4 roofs and Hydrostop fluid applied roofing systems on the other 2 roofs. Commercial Roofing was responsible for the tear-off and re-roofing of the 4 main buildings.

Extreme care had to be taken during the project especially in the loading and unloading of materials to and from the rooftop as businesses were in operation and could not be impeded. Staging was set in an unobtrusive area and transportation, loading and installations had to revolve around sensitivity to the customers and business operations of the tenants below. With multiple types of businesses located beneath the roofs, CRW had to work around the equipment on the roof without disruption to the businesses. Restaurants had their grease traps spitting out fumes and oils, as well as HVAC equipment and related condensation lines, antennas, dishes and extensions.

This project utilized an installation system called RhinoBond on the Sarnafil roofs. The Rhinobond electromagnetic induction tool was utilized for superior attachment of the PVC membranes versus traditional welding. “The system uses the same fastener and plate to secure both the insulation and membrane to the deck without penetrating the roofing material. The result is a FM-approved system that does not create any port of entry for moisture, requires fewer fasteners and provides superior wind uplift performance.” (OMG Roofing Products)
